Hi, welcome to lianablack.com

If you’re a writer, reader, literary fan at large, an angry woman, a flittery queer, a creative man,
a sporty deep-thinker, or just an overthinker, you may like it here.

About Liana Black

A neurodivergent queer woman with a severe case of extroversion, Liana always has ten projects on the go and can’t reach her own off-switch.

Liana writes—what she is trying to coin—love & angst fiction. Her writing has been published by the Guardian Australia, highly commended by Faber Academy, and shortlisted by the Australian Writer’s Centre and the Kat Muscat Fellowship. She was also selected for Express Media’s 2026 Toolkits - Fiction program.

She has worked professionally in a number of roles across football operations, consumer business, and marketing & communications within the Australian Football industry since she was 18 years old.

Amongst her work, she has spent almost a decade advocating for LGBTQIA+ progress within Australian sport.

She began freelance editing and critiquing works of fiction in 2020 and has helped develop works to publication, including short stories, personal essays, and full-length novels.

In 2026, she will be going on submission with her gritty, literary romance novel, THE LOVE OF THE GAME, and has founded Sugarbowl Writers House, a writers residency in Queensland, Australia launching in 2027.

I’m headless but having fun

Sugarbowl Writers House

in 2026, I’ve started my dream: starting a writers' residency. Sugarbowl Writers House in Tamborine Mountain will launch in 2027, including fellowship and discounted places.

The Love of the Game

THE LOVE OF THE GAME is the gritty, angry, feminist, literary reply to Heated Rivalry.

CADS is the Australian Football’s biggest star with his contract up for renewal. Missing his now-long-distance fiancé, Grace, and secretly yearning for his past gay love, Nicky, Cads begins an affair with a twink bartender which could destroy the golden life he’s sacrificed everything for.

Haunted by his choices and under the constant pressure of elite men’s sport, Cads must choose between THE LOVE OF THE GAME and love itself.
